After a day of eating too many pink cupcakes (they're "pinkalicious!") a pigtailed girl wakes up to discover she's pink through and through. The pink-crazed protagonist joins several others starring in recent titles (Kate Feiffer's Double Pink; J.otto Seibold's The Fuchsia Is Now). "I cried because I was so beautiful," gushes the heroine. "I even had pink tears." And given the pediatrician's suggested cure-"a steady diet of green food"-the girl is perfectly happy to remain as she is. But when she covertly eats one more pink cupcake and turns fire-engine red, she realizes it's time to take the doctor's advice. A witty montage of photos, clip art and drawings captures the heroine eating every kid's nightmare: "pickles and spinach, olives and okra." The text may be literal and obvious, but the artwork creates enough visual interest to keep pink-loving gals involved in this tale of wonderful-to-wretched excess. Ages 5-8.

PreS-Gr 2-Pink and positivity are back again with the latest easy reader installment starring Pinkalicious. This time, Pinkalicious and her classmates have been assigned kindergarten buddies for the day. Interestingly, Pinkalicious's buddy, Mia, is a complete grump, emphatically stating that, "Kindergarten is NOT fun." Of course, Pinkalicious is not remotely daunted by such a statement and shows Mia all the ways that learning and making friends can be "funtastic," "hulamazing," and "yumtastic." For example, in their math lesson, they eat cupcakes to understand subtraction, and during science they make slime. Pinkalicious even shows Mia how to be resilient and solve her painting problem when Mia thinks she has ruined her "perfectly pink painting." By the end of the story, Mia is not only cheering because she thinks kindergarten is so much fun, but because she has made three new friends. Elementary students love the time-honored school tradition of having a buddy and will consequently connect with this story. The illustrations match the upbeat text, showing a diverse and happy group of students in a classroom that encourages creativity and self-expression. VERDICT Students who are learning to read will enjoy visiting a vibrant kindergarten classroom with Pinkalicious.-Sally James
